The weekend added to the delight of the fans of the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping Series as Ludger Beerbaum bagged the victory in his own country. The fifth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping Series 2009/2010 was held in Stuttgart, Germany on Sunday the 22nd of November, 2009. The event was witness to a glittering line-up. Ludger Beerbaum and his eight year old mare Gotha withstood the challenge against the likes of in-form Frenchman Michel Robert who had to settle for the runner-up position with Kellemoi de Pepita. Carsten-Otto Nagel along with Corradina took third. Carsten-Otto Nagel has been a silver medalist at the Alltech FEI European. Olympic Silver medalist Rolf-Goran Bengtsson came in fourth while reigning individual European Champion Kevin Staut took the fifth position.
The competition was extremely fierce at the Uliano Vezzani designed 12-fence track. With early retirements, there were nine left into the jump-off. Since there were four riders representing Germany in the jump-off, it was clear the winner would be a native. The event marked the 25th anniversary of the Stuttgart German Masters. Ludger Beerbaum’s Gotha was amongst the youngest horses in the competition along with Pius Schwizer’s Carlina. The oldest horse in the competition was Marcus Ehning’s Sandro Boy from Germany.
Ludger Beerbaum jumped to victory with no faults and stopped the clock at 38.25 seconds. The first to go against the clock was Germany’s Philipp Weishaupt atop Catoki. The first to set the standard, he stopped the clock at 39.98 seconds with a total of four faults. Next up was Christian Ahlmann and his nine year old Taloubet Z who had two down, which left the result still wide open. Third in line and into the ring was Lauren Hough with Quick Study. The Californian seemed quite determined; however, had to make
peace with 40.25 seconds on the clock and a total of four faults.
Excitement filled the air when next up was Carsten-Otto Nagel the silver medalist from Windsor with Corradina. Together they re-set the target to 39.19 seconds and raised the bar for the remaining riders. Casall la Silla ridden by Rolf-Goran Bengtsson from Sweden were careful not to get any faults but could stop the clock only at 41.13 seconds that later put them on the fourth position. Ludger Beerbaum and his trusted mare Gotha were up next to take victory with their time of 38.25 seconds.
The 46 year old had secured the World Cup title with the great Ratina Z at Gothenburg almost 16 years ago. Extremely proud of his young mare, Ludger Beerbaum stated he was delighted yet not completely surprised as she was consistent and had more experience for her age. Gotha has already done a few Grand Prix classes and this win was definitely an addition to her eventful career. With this weekend’s event, Ludger Beerbaum now stands at the fourth position with 34 points in the over-all standings. Daniel Etter still is at number one with a total of 40 points. Ludger Beerbaum has no plans for Gotha yet and would like her to rest for the season. The sixth leg is scheduled to be held in Great Britain from 15th to the 21st of December at London-Olympia.
